Little garden 1

On Tuesday, 11 October we planted the first of our seeds. We have been given. They are being collected from New World Little garden by our friends and families.  #LittleGardenNZ .

We put the dirt in the water and it got big and fat because it soaked up the water.
We put some dirt in the pot, then we put in the seed paper then more dirt.
Tonja planted eggplant seeds.
Kendyl planted capsicum seeds.
Alicia planted rocket seeds.
Edwin planted radish seeds.
max planted parsley seeds.
Zakara planted spring onion seeds.
Freesia planted cres.

Shelley and Michelle worked in the garden and planted an Atlantic Pumpkin. If we are lucky by the autumn it will have grown enormous.

Matariki
Matariki is in the middle of winter. To the Maori it is the beginning of a new year. Serena
Matariki  is about family and we are part of the Sommerville family. We shared our feast with our friends and some important teachers. Tonja
I chopped lots of vegetables because we had a big feast. Freesia
At our Matariki lunch we ate potatoes, broccoli, pumpkin, chicken, silver beet. We had cooked apple, rhubarb and hokey pokey ice cream for dessert. Everybody ate lots of food. Edwin
Matariki is about music so  I sang the song to the visitors. Kendyl
I said the karakai and remembered the  people not with us and blessed the food.  This  was  my last Matariki as a student at Sommerville. I’d like to be invited back next year as a visitor. Max

Recycling food scraps

Last year in our old building, Tamaki, we did food scrap recycling for the whole building. We put the scraps in our Bokashi bin. and put them in the gardens. Now we are at our new site by Sommerville  NO ONE does food scrap recycling. We have a big garden that could use lots of compost to help the plants grow. Food scraps make good compost. The food scraps we collect will mean less rubbish in the bins.
We want to make less rubbish in the bins We need more food scraps for our compost. So we made a plan.
We will know it has worked when:
  1. People use the scrap buckets
  2. Other people want to join in
  3. There is less rubbish AND we have lots of compost.

This is what we are doing.
We bought lots of red boxes and named them food scraps.
The classrooms put their food scraps in the red box.

After lunch we take clean empty boxes over and swap them for the ones with food scraps in.
We tip the scraps in the round compost bin.
We wash the boxes ready for tomorrow.
We still put a Bokashi bin at Tamaki and when it is full we swap it for an empty one and put the food scraps in our garden.

outside fun

The flour went on my face because I was mixing pancakes outside and the wind blew it.
I put the mixture in the hot pan carefully. I turned the pancakes. I ate the pancakes with jam, YUM!

We are making money.

We are making money.

Every Friday we make something yummy to sell to the adults across the road at Sommerville. We ask them for a donation. We are learning about money as part of a SPEC unit. We will use the money to help pay for things for our garden and maybe a special outing.
We have made cheese scones and date scones and for Easter we made chocolate slice. It took a long time to smash up the biscuits.

Easter fun

Today we went on an Easter Egg Hunt around the property at #26. We had to find the clues and read them.
When we found the eggs we got to eat them.
Our clues looked like this:

we practiced our reading and thinking and even remembered some of the things we are learning for our SPEC recycling unit.

Sports Day

On Wednesday 16 March we went to the Special Olympics Athletics Day.
Tonja had to run in 2 races. She came first in her 50m race. she ran well in the 100m too and came 5th.

Freesia and Kendyl and Alicia walked very fast. They came 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Freesia said she felt really "good after her walking race and happy too".

Max had a tough race against William and Chance. William shot off like a fast rabbit but Max and Chance battled to the finish line where Chance just beat Max. In the next race Max ran hard and just beat Jason.

Edwin and Amie did fast walking. We got very hot.

We are now #26

We are now #26. Its a real house, just across the road from the Sommerville base school.
Our days are busy.We still shred important papers for the teachers and do their laminating.
We care for our own space by doing the housework. Things like loading our dishwasher and washing our togs, vacuuming  and cleaning the bathroom. We even use the push mower to keep the grass nice in our garden. We have worked hard in the vegetable garden and hope we will get vegetables in the winter.

We  take turns making the juice for everyone to share and YAY we get to practice our cooking in a real kitchen. For the last three weeks we've taken turns to make noodle fritters. we've chopped lots of vegetables and been careful with the frying pan.

We eat our lunch outside in the shade under the trees and at breaks we listen to music.Watch this space for more on how we keep busy.
